Yay for finally entering the 2nd trimester of being pregnant! I am officially 14 weeks today. There's a few inconsistencies out there about when your 2nd trimester actually begins, but I believe by the 14th week, I'm officially in it!
It's amazing how much the baby has already been growing, but I believe this trimester (s)he'll hit a growth spurt and will start to look more like a person, and not so much an alien. Apparently, my baby can now make facial expressions and suck his/her thumb! I wonder if they'll be a finger/thumb sucker like me. And have a "piece-of-mat" like I did. And baby can now pee - where does it go? I try not to think about that too much. And in the fruit category, my baby is the size of a lemon. Next week an apple, followed by an avocado. (Baby websites and books are HUGE on the fruit comparisons).
My "morning" sickness has for the most part gone away. Not totally yet though. Luckily, I haven't had it as bad as a lot of my pregnant friends. Although puke purgatory isn't exactly rainbows either. I have a bit more energy now and try to exercise on as many days as I can. Don't worry, that usually involves taking walks, lifting light weights or prenatal yoga.
Only the slightest hint of a "bump" but nothing anyone would notice. Besides that, there's a lot of other changes going on that I never knew came with being pregnant. Luckily, I have an amazing husband that takes great care of me all the time. He lets me sleep as much as I want, rubs my feet even though he's the one that's been working all week, buys Subway every day for lunch (veggie delight, of course), and usually is the one going to Subway to get the sub, and many many many other things.
So far, it's been a pretty exciting adventure and we're stoked to be on it!

Ultrasound #4
On Wednesday we had our 4th ultrasound to date at 13 weeks 1 day. This time it was with a high-risk doctor at a perinatal center. I'm not high-risk, but my regular doc sends all her patients to have this particular screening done for Down syndrome. Secretly I think she thought it would be a great photo-op and she was right!
Technology is quite amazing and we left with a DVD of the entire ultrasound! We saw our baby on a big flat screen TV mounted on the wall while the doctor took measurements and looked at all of his/her developing organs. We saw that the heart has 4 working chambers, the brain, the spine, and blood that was being pumped from the umbilical cord! And listened to a healthy strong heartbeat of 158 beats per minute.
There are 3-D pictures on our DVD, but unfortunately, we don't have any printouts of that and Baby Willoughby was being a little camera shy. So these are the pictures we do have from that ultrasound. Since it's only been a week since our last one, there hasn't been TOO much change. But we're parents, and we're proud of our little one!

Praise God, we were (pre) approved for a loan! Now the search is on for a home in southern California. We've had our eye on this little gem in the hills of Montecito...

Visiting home
Why is that I live in California and I love living here and pay (A LOT of) rent here, but I still call Virginia my home? I do fight it sometimes, like when Mom says, "When are you coming home?" and I respond, "I am home." (Sorry Mom, that's me being a brat). Either way, Virginia will always be "my home," but I am settling into the fact that California is where we're meant to be and where we'll be raising our little one. (Unless Rob gets hired by Hawaiian Airlines!) I do love California. I really do think the people are friendlier on the west coast, I love Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, really wide bike lanes, seeing dolphins almost every single time I'm at the beach, living AT the beach, the fact that Rob and I have two types of bikes - beach cruisers and road bikes, surfing (even if a wetsuit is required most of the year), the emphasis on healthy eating and healthy living, and the nearly perfect weather year round. I love California. (California in general, not specifically LA).
I was so happy to go out to Virginia a few weeks ago and visit with family, friends, and experience a "real" summer with real thunderstorms. Rob, being the excellent chef that he is, cooked up some delicious food on the grill for a cookout on the porch. It's always fun catching up with friends that I don't always talk to regularly. "Old friends" are the best. We grew up together. Shared those awkward teenage prom years together. Took band trips together. Became "adults" together.
And the best friends are the ones that you don't have to talk to every single day, but step right back into normal conversation as if no time had passed at all.

Anyone from the South, knows exactly where Brandi and I are rocking in those rocking chairs. Cracker Barrel, of course. By the way, I believe I ate there a total of 3 times while in Virgnia. And we'll definitely be back in the a few months to do it all over again.

Ultrasound #3
Today I had my 3rd ultrasound. I'm currently at 12 weeks... but does that mean I'm out of my 1st trimester? There's lots of conflicting information about when your 2nd trimester starts. Oh well. It was a pretty standard appointment and I'm realizing how blessed I am to actually have seen my baby a total of 3 times! I've read from other expectant mothers that they will only have very few ultrasounds throughout their whole pregnancy.
I saw a strong heartbeat (approximately 160bpm) but apparently Baby Willoughby was sleeping. The doctor poked and poked trying to get some movement, but we only got one flippant move of the head. I think he/she was saying, "please leave me alone, I am sleeping." Our baby already has manners. I saw his arm and hand (with fingers!!) in front of his head and you can see the developing spine.
Next week I'll have another ultrasound to screen for Down's Syndrome, but my doctor said it will be an excellent photo op for our baby since they'll be using a high tech sonogram. But for now, like my sister-in-law said, he is a "cute little alien!"
